Shelter is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Services:
NOA is a private, not-for-profit domestic violence shelter program. 24-apr-08 14:28 and Dawson Counties. NOA has a 24-hr crisis line and an 11- bed emergency shelter for battered women and their children. The services available to both residential and non-residential clients include: Women’s Support Group, Children’s Group, Professional Counseling, Legal Advocacy, Child Management classes, and Personal Advocacy (information, referrals, and assistance with housing, employment, child care, transportation, education, health needs). NOA also provides community and school education programs regarding domestic violence.

All services are provided free of charge to clients.

Rape Response is a rape crisis center responding to the needs of sexual assault victims from Lumpkin, Hall, Dawson, Habersham, and White Counties. Our services include a 24-hour crisis hotline, hospital support to victims in the emergency room, counseling for rape victims, family members and friends. Criminal justice support is provided for rape victims who are participating in court hearings or police investigations. All services are free and completely confidential

Volunteer Opportunities:
Rape Response welcomes women 20 years or older who have a strong interest in helping people. No previous education or training is required. Volunteers are on call at night and on weekends, on a rotating schedule and are free to maintain their own schedules while using the paging system to respond to any telephone or hospital emergency room calls. Training for new volunteer advocates takes place twice a year, in a series of classes, to total approximately 15 hours before joining the call schedule.

For adults, children and families in need of counseling or help with accessing and increasing involvement within the community and or community resources such as school, Parks & Recreation, Department of Family & Children Service, Department of Juvenile Justice. The Phoenix House accepts referrals from Mental Health. It is a day program for adults who suffer from severe and chronic mental illness. The Phoenix House teaches social and daily living skills to help patients cope with their illnesses. Contact the number above for more information.

The Mountain Education Center (MEC) is a regional state accredited high school, which offers a high school diploma in an individualized, self-paced program of instruction. M.E.C. is open year round, Monday- Thursday 3:30 – 9:30 PM.
Fees:
There are no fees for students who are not enrolled in another high school and are in attendance at M.E.C. for at least a semester.
M.E.C. serves students in the surrounding Northeast Georgia area that have failed classes in their day school. The cost is $250.00 per unit of credit.

North Georgia College and State University is a comprehensive university offering Associates Degree (Nursing), Bachelors and Masters Degrees. Adults who have been out of high school more than five years can attend North Georgia as a non-traditional student without having to take SAT/ACT. All non-traditional students need to show proof of high school graduation or completion of a GED.
Registration Process and Fees:
To apply to NGCSU as a non-traditional student, you must complete an application for admission and return it with $25.00 non-refundable application fee. For more information applying as a non-traditional student, contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at 706-864-1800 and speak with an Admissions Officer or look at our website at www.ngcsu.edu . The University conducts tours each weekday at 2:00 PM and on Saturdays at 10:00 AM. Please call to schedule a time and date.

The Family Connection Collaborative is comprised of local agencies, organizations, and individuals who work together to provide services to benefit the youth and their families in Lumpkin County. Family Connection provides Family Advocates, located in each elementary school, to assist families with location resources to help meet their needs. In addition, Family Connection provides students with proactive growth opportunities including challenge course activities, leadership training, peer helping/mentoring training and services, during school and after school enrichment courses, and summer camp classes. Family Connection also works in conjunction with Lumpkin County Schools targeting tobacco, alcohol and drug prevention programs.
Volunteer Opportunities:
To donate money or items to assist families in need contact Anita Middleton. Items needed include packaged and canned food, toiletries, school supplies, and books. Other ways to contribute are with gas vouchers, grocery gift certificates, and automotive repair vouchers. Provide orientation and training to individuals who would like to become a mentor for a Lumpkin County student and match mentees with mentors. What is a mentor? In general, a mentor serves as a friend, a guide, an advisor, and positive role model. Mentoring is an opportunity for adult leaders within our community to make a positive difference in a student’s life.
Mentors are expected to make weekly contact in some form (phone call, postcard, email, and /or face to face) with their mentee. Mentors are expected to make face to face contact at least twice a month during the school day.

Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people who need help in meeting basic housing needs from repairs and renovations to complete new houses. They work in conjunction with individuals who need assistance. To apply you must live in Lumpkin County in sub-standard housing. You must be unable to pay for repairs or a new house with your own savings and resources or be unable to qualify for a conventional loan. Other financial guidelines may apply. Scouts benefit from award programs and earning ranks through the scouting program. Scouts volunteer for community projects such as food drives and services to the community volunteers.
